xbox 360: project natal

If you have not seen the media launch video of Project Natal — there is no harm to view them again (and again). Project Natal is a totally new method of gaming using the existing xbox360 console; with NO controllers required. Yes, no controller is needed; instead xbox360 will be able to use your whole body, its movement with depth; and also responds to the voice commands. Of course, xbox360 will also recognize your face!

The video demo is below — this is really a revolution in gaming experience, a little bit creepy to.

How does it work?

Project Natal uses a set of quite advanced sensor to deliver this experience. Project Natal combines an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone, and a custom processor that runs some proprietary software. Combined, you’ve got a sensor that tracks body movement, individual voices, and recognizes faces. The camera provides the required three basic color components to xbox360 to enable full body tracking and of course, that, face recognition.

The depth sensor is really an infrared projector combined with a CMOS sensor — this enables xbox360 to see the living room in 3D!

The launch date is not available yet — but there are a lot of game developers already working on this. There is one called Milo where it enables realistic interaction between Milo and human! Creepy.. but really amazing that we have now this type of technology that we can do in our own living room.

See for yourself.

We want this! Arghhh……….

Our Carbon footprint @ home — revision 1

Darn it .. seems like our home carbon footprint is 38 ton!

I was just doing some simple calculations of the electricity consumption at home.. being curious, I equated the expected kWh usage to the amount of coal that needed to be dug out in order to produce a kWh.

Ok.. after puting some heat value efficiency on coal and power plant conversion; it appeared to me that we release a whopping 37.5 ton of carbon dioxide annually? Wowww — this is however, lower than the industrialized countries average of 80 ton (3 person household); yet higher than the world average of 17 ton (3 person household).

Googling, if we were indeed releasing that huge amount of greenhouse gas, we would need to plant at least 62 trees per person in this topical area of Sabah; just to balance out what we have created … and that is excluding the cars, that C3/C4 in cooking gas, cooking oil, meats, petrol and so on.

Ouch, a painful reminder. We can do better.

What’s on your refrigerator?

What stuffs do you have on your refrigerators? Some could be useful, some could just be any geeky stuffs!

Barong - The Gatekeeper

Barong - The Gatekeeper

We do have ours list below. All these have been sticking on the freezer for a long time, just that we didnt really pay any attention to them all these while. Some of them are:

  • Postcard from NZ — yes, you’ll notice that with the nice post, 2000km card! Nice pose.
  • InBody BMI calculations (Ah ha! We know exactly why was this here.. it was that one moment a long time ago, a sudden spur to lose 10kg! This number has got to be a lot more now.. ;)
  • Magnetic alphabets and numbers; so when we are bored — we can compose and leave any deceptive messages on the refrigerator (so geek!)
  • Emergency numbers — a directory of useful numbers (including Tong Gas Rahman dan Rakan2)
  • Various magnetic stickers from a few places we’ve visited
  • Nando’s menu and delivery telephone number: yeah — still loving that extra hot peri-eri
  • Oppss.. Domino’s delivery & menu (there goes that InBody BMI calculation…)
  • Magnetic photoframe (still no picture in it)
  • Cool magnetic Bali Hard Rock Hotel sticker
  • Cyberjaya & Putrajaya Taxi Numbers
  • Magnetic pen that sits on a few pieces of notepad papers ..

and of course, the best of all, is the gatekeeper Barong lion magnetic wooden mask shown in the photo.
