How many cats can fit in a 1 terabyte?

So how many cats can you fit inside one terabyte hard disk? We got one — Lemon the cat, was so eager to explore a new byte-size home. This is a 1 TB external HDD with USD2.0 connectivity from Western Digital, purchased over the weekend in KL.

Hmm.. if you are an mp3 collector, typically a decent size mp3 will be at about 3000 kilobytes or about 3,000,000 bytes per song (1 kb = 1024 bytes). So that means in 1 TB, you can fit at least 333,333 mp3 songs!! If you want proof, just divide 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (approx 1 TB) with 3,000,000 bytes per song. So, that is a huge collection of songs. Again, if one song is about 4 minutes; you can then listen all of them for at least 2.5 years continuously! Yeah.. Malaysia BOLEH!

So how many cats can fit in? One character is 1 byte, so CATS has 4 characters, or 4 bytes. So there will be 250, 000,000,000 cats can fit in inside 1 TB :-)

Western Digital says: This 1 TB can hold:

Up to 285,000 digital photos
Up to 250,000 songs (MP3)
Up to 25,000 songs (uncompressed CD quality)
Up to 76 hours of Digital Video (DV)
Up to 440 hours of DVD quality video
Up to 120 hours of HD video

One gigabyte (GB) = one billion bytes. One terabyte (TB) = one trillion bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending on operating environment.

The damage: PC Fair Malaysia 2008

Aug 1- 3rd 2008: PC Fair 2008 in Kuala Lumpur; at KL Convention Centre. We went there on the 3rd at abt 3pm; and it was still crowded as expected. In fact, there were so many people, at one time I felt the air was running out (yes, serious as a heart attack!). And since the was so little room to move around — we quickly concluded that prices were just slightly cheaper than those listed at LYP on normal days.. and that we would just need to find the “designated exit” (the organizer has decided, yet again, to have limited designated exits, so that visitors would have to walk and go through all the halls before one could go out).

well.. that was the original idea.

By 8pm, we summed up the damages to be:

  • 1 set of Altec Lansing VS computer speaker
  • 5 sets of canon MP300 cartridges (yes, for 5 colors, thats 25 boxes!)
  • Another 5 sets of Imprint cartridges (yes, for that MP300)
  • 2 units of 19″ BenQ LCD monitors
  • One computer headphone (with those big muffs)
  • Canon EOS40D urrgg dropped from the list: we are sure we could get a better offer elsewhere
  • Blistered fingers (from dragging all these from Hall 1 to ISETAN & car park! — that’s probably 2km)

Big complaint: get rid of the walk-flow system where you have to go through Hall 1 until Hall 5 to exit from that place. With all those stuffs; we could hardly walk in-gadget styles without stomping, stumbling, kicking and cursing.

Additional damages due to PC Fair 2008 fever:

  • Intel P43 P5QL-E motherboard with Intel C2D
  • GeForce 8600GT XFX Graphics Card (yes, with dual monitor support for the 2 benq lcds)
  • LG DVD-RW driver
  • Windows XP

yes, we’ve made one!

Sunday 2:30pm — at cyberjaya, slightly drizzling outside; cool weather.

2:34pm: an idea to make our own lighbox popped out! So here we go.

  • one Antonius frame ~ RM20, we bought this about 2 months back from IKEA Damansara (with the bag) Oppss.. that was Sarah’s laundry bag that became the victim. Only needed the frame, so the bag has to go.
  • 4 pieces of white flourescent bulbs (we use 4 because each is only 8Watts, we need to have at least 15Watts on each sidelightings) ~ 4 x RM12/each = RM48.
  • 4 pieces of white strawboard panel ~ RM6.50/each, from Tesco Puchong
  • cable ties (you can buy one bag from Tesco outlets, maybe about RM0.10/pc but Tesco actually sells this in a big packet eventhough you’ll only be needing about 40 pieces to tie the strawboards on the antonius frame)
  • Total cost ~ RM150.00

Sarah’s antonius laundry bag was the victim!

Frame for the lightbox

The frame was just perfect at W38xD35, H67cm dimension

8Watts white flourescent lightbulbs. The white background is the strawboard.

You’ll just need to affix all the strawboards onto the 5 sides of the box frame: you’ll need cable tie for this. Fix two flourescent lights on each sides of the box. Once all is fixed, you can then use a white paper as the background. And here is the final product.

And muffin too.

Total time taken: slightly over 1 hour.

Results? You’ll be the judge.
